Squeakers was his name. Rolling around the house in a plastic ball was his game. I came home from school one day and placed him in the usual fort I had created, on the kitchen floor. I turned a blind eye for what felt like a second, before discovering he cleverly had abandoned the fort and went through a crack and behind the dishwasher. The only way to get him out was to place food right at the entrance of the dishwasher and wait. I sat there for what felt like forever. Staring and waiting for him to emerge. Eventually he popped right back out and headed for the food. That was the end of the forts, the beginning of the ball and a lesson of true patience.

Milo the hamster was my family’s first pet –my daughter’s pet, and we adopted him when my daughter was in 2nd grade. I’d lived my whole life without a pet and boy, was I surprised how much in love I fell with that little rodent. Probably because he didn’t look like a rodent at all. He used to take a peanut from my hand every night. We were told he’d live about 2 years (about 50 years in human terms), and he lasted just about that long. Sadly, he got some type of virus and was so miserable for the last few days of his life that we actually arranged for the vet to put him down. Since we live in the city, we buried him in my husband’s childhood backyard with all the other old family pets they had buried there! A great pet he was!
